Q. My vehicle has been impounded. What do I do?
A. First you must obtain a tow-in release form from the Police Department. The vehicle’s registered owner must be present with proof of vehicle ownership in order to obtain the tow-in release. You must also have a valid United States driver’s license or bring someone with you who has a valid license. Second, you take the tow-in release form you received from the Police Department to the wrecker service to obtain your vehicle. When you receive your tow-in release form you will be told which wrecker service has your vehicle in their secure lot. Vehicles are released between 7:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m., seven days a week.

To make a police report, you may come to the Sylacauga Police Department or request that an officer respond to your location inside the city limits. Q. What do I need to do after a vehicle accident?
A. You will need a copy of the Accident Report in order to file an insurance claim. If a Sylacauga Police Officer filed the report, a copy may be obtained from the Records Division.
Call your insurance company as soon as possible after the accident. Your insurance company may pick up a copy of the report and complete any necessary documentation.

A. After 5-7 business days, you may obtain a copy of your report by visiting the Records Division of the Sylacauga Police Department, Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., or visit CrashDocs.org. Arrest reports are not public record and cannot be obtained without a subpoena from the relevant court. Reverse sides of Incident/Offense reports may be obtained only through subpoena.
Copies of police reports are available at a cost of $5.00. Prices for other media such as videos, photographs, etc., are available from the Records Division upon request.

A. The City of Sylacauga has a "Restraint Law" that pertains to dogs only. If you live in the city limits and are bothered by barking dogs or dogs roaming in your neighborhood, call the Communications Office at 256-401-2442. A police employee will take your complaint and assign it to the Nuisance Control Officer. Dogs not under restraint may be picked up and taken to the Animal Shelter. In most cases, however, the owner of the dog is given a warning. After the first warning, the owner may be fined if the person reporting the violation is willing to sign a complaint.
When a dog is picked up, every effort is made to contact the owner. If your dog is missing, please call the Animal Shelter at 256-245-2590.
Q. How do I discreetly report a crime or suspicious activity?
A. If you see or hear of activity that is criminal or suspicious, there are several ways you can report this activity without fear of being identified. All information will be judged on its own merit. The police department will not take action on unsupported information. That does not mean the activity will not be reviewed.

A. If possible, notify the police department at one week prior to leaving to request extra patrol. This information is forwarded to our Patrol Division so additional patrol of the area can be arranged.

A. A sex offender registry is maintained at the Sylacauga Police Department's Investigations Division. You may review information on local sex offenders in person Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. To search the internet for sex offenders, visit dps.alabama.gov, go to links, and click on sex offender information.
