Historical Commission
The Sylacauga Historical Commission's mission is to preserve the city's historical, cultural, and aesthetic heritage. The Commission was created in 2006 to stimulate revitalization of the Sylacauga Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004, through a non-regulated and voluntary design review process.
Contributing property owners in the Historic District may participate in discussions with the Commission regarding major changes to properties within the District. Two major goals of the Commission are to establish regulated design review guidelines for long-range planning and development in the Historic District and install additional historic signage to enhance heritage tourism.
The Commission also develops and presents educational programs for the community and recommends preservation activities for the Sylacauga Cemetery (1839), which is the last remaining landmark of old town Sylacauga.
The Commission takes the lead in bringing awareness of the Alabama Bicentennial Commission (1819-2019) by helping students in local schools develop a digital presentation of how Sylacauga has contributed to the state's story.
